Kula Kai Caverns and Lava Tubes Excursions

The Kula Kai Caverns are ancient lava tubes dating back hundreds of years. Created by the island's volcanic activity, the caves were used over the millennia for shelter and as a source of water.

Illuminated guided tours take you beneath the surface to learn about the history and geology of the caverns. Gear up with helmet, lights, pads and gloves to take the more demanding crawl tour or extended tour to more remote caves.

For a similar, less claustrophobic experience, visit the Thurston Lava Tube in Volcanoes National park, which is so huge you could drive a truck through it.

Practical Info

The Kula Kai Caverns and Lava Tubes are in the south of the island near South Point, west of Kilauea Volcano. It’s a 45 minute drive from Kona.
