At 9:00am, you'll be picked up from your hotel or train station in Datong. Your first stop will be to Yungang Grottoes, a primary attraction that people around the world make a special trip to see in Datong. The grottoes host over 500,000 Buddhist statues and stretching for about slightly under one mile (1km) from east to west.
Your next stop will be the Nine Dragon Screen, one of the three renowned Nine Dragon Screens in China. The glaze-tiled screen was built in 1771 during the administration of Emperor Qianlong. It is around 12 feet (3.5 meters) tall and 98 feet (30 meters) wide. It consists 270 pieces of glazed tiles featuring 9 dragons playing with pearls with a background of clouds and ocean waves.
After lunch, you'll visit Datong Museum which resides in an impressive space of 164,000 square feet (50,000 square meters) with an exhibition area of 10,936 square feet (10,000 square meters). It showcases a collection of 4,000 artifacts carefully selected from 70,000 incredible relics curated by the city.
Once your visit at the Museum is over, you'll be taken back to your hotel in Datong.
Day 2 (L)
Your day will begin at 9:00am where you'll be picked up from your hotel. Enjoy a scenic drive to Hanging temple which is about 40 miles (60km) away in southeast of Datong. Along the way to the Hanging Temple, you'll stop at the Cave Houses Village where you'll be introduced to how the locals live. After a short visit in the village, you'll continue on to the Hanging Temple. The temple hangs on the west cliff of a hill about 246 feet above the ground, hence the hanging monastery. The Hanging Monastery was first built over 1500 years ago. Current monastery was rebuilt and refurbished in both Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The biggest attraction of Hanging Temple is the fact that the temple includes Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
After lunch, you will move on to Yingxian County to visit the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, the oldest and largest wooden Buddhist pagoda in existence in the world. The pagoda is a 9-story octagonal building about 219 feet (67meters) tall. It was was built without using any nails. It is admired as one of the "Three Wonders of Pagodas in the world" alongside with Eiffel Tower in France and leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.
At the end of your tour, you will be transferred by private car or van back to your hotel or train station in Datong.
