Greet your small group and friendly local guide at 9am in central York – just a minute's walk from the famous York Minster. Hop aboard the minibus and head out into the beautiful Yorkshire Dales: their dramatic landscapes can show to their best effect in winter!

It's a scenic hour-or-so drive from York to your first stop, Masham. You'll travel through Boroughbridge, a pretty town that marks the midway point between London and Edinburgh, and Ripon, with its ancient cathedral and vibrant market square. Masham (say 'Mass-em'!) is known for its breweries, steam engines, annual sheep fair, and thriving market, which it's held since 1251.

It's about half an hour's drive through rolling countryside to the town of Middleham, nestled between two rivers. You'll stop to take a look at the mighty ruins of Middleham Castle, where King Richard III spent some of his childhood: it boasts the largest castle keep in the north of England.

Once you've captured pictures, travel through the pretty town of Leyburn and scenic Wensleydale for about half an hour to Reeth, where you'll stop for lunch (own expense). A natural amphitheater, embedded amid stunning panoramas, Dales author Ella Pontefract described Reeth as “a little country in itself”. This adorable village dates back to Saxon times.

After you've fortified yourself with some warming pub grub, it's time for the 20-minute drive to 14th-century Castle Bolton. Over 600 years old, this is one of England's best-preserved medieval castles: Mary, Queen of Scots, spent part of her imprisonment here.

Photos taken, it's a short drive to Aysgarth Falls, a triple flight of tumbling falls that are at their most impressive during winter when the River Ure is full. Your guide will explain how they were featured in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Hop back in the van for the 5-minute ride to picturesque West Burton, with its classically beautiful village green. The Romantic landscape painter JMW Turner painted the village's striking Cauldron Falls when he visited northern England.

Your guide will point out key features as you cruise through the Dales for 45 minutes or so to the village of Grassington. You'll leave Wensleydale, cross into Wharfedale, and see the classic Dales villages of Buckden, Kettlewell, and Kilnsey, dominated by the Kilnsey Crag, a striking limestone cliff.

Take time to explore this classic Dales market town, with its cobbled market square, vintage stone houses, friendly pubs, and shops packed with local foods and gifts, before you hop back in the minibus for the 20-minute drive to pretty Pateley Bridge.

From here, it's a bit over an hour's drive back to downtown York. You'll pass through Nidderdale, see the stunning teetering rock formations known as Brimham Rocks, and admire more classic Yorkshire scenery along the way, returning to your original meeting point around 5:30pm.
